The Last Boyscout (1991)

Well folks the wife is out and after a hearing a few ‘your mama’s so fat’ jokes the other day. I decided to kick back and watch one of my favourites and the source of many a fat women joke, 1991’s rather splendid ‘The Last Boyscout’ starring Bruce Willis.

Bruce plays Joe Hallenbeck, an extremely wisecracking burnt out PI. After finishing a job in Vegas early, Joe comes back to find his wife Sarah (Chelsea Field from Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man) having an affair with his friend and fellow PI Mike (Timecop’s Bruce McGill). Joe is pissed off and decides to take a job protecting an exotic dancer called Cory (Halle Berry) to take his mind of it. He meets Cory’s boyfriend and ex football star Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans). As Joe can’t even protect a warm cup of piss (according to Jimmy), it all goes wrong and Cory is murdered leaving Joe and Jimmy to reluctantly team up and find out who ordered the hit.

That’s it, pretty simple huh. So why waste time with this one? Well it is written by Shane Black, the king of the buddy movie. His CV includes ‘Lethal Weapon’, ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’, ‘The Long Kiss Goodnight’, and (other Nick fav) ‘The ‘Monster Squad’. It’s also directed by Tony Scott. Again another impressive CV including ‘Top Gun’, ‘True Romance’, ‘Man on Fire’, ‘Crimson Tide’, and ‘Days of Thunder’.

Acting wise Bruce is Bruce and at his wise cracking best. Although this is definitely due to the quality of the script. Action film wise he followed this up with the frankly shit ‘Striking Distance’, and the even worse ‘Colour of Night’ thankfully he got another stab at the big time with ‘Pulp Fiction’ and by reprising the role of John McClaine in ‘Die Hard Hard With a Vengeance’.

Action wise there are some great scenes involving guns, cars, C4, and good old fashion fisty cuffs. Trust me you will never forget the ‘touch me again, I’ll kill you’ scene.
